چکیده

Leaf sequencing is an important step in IMRT treatment planning. A given fluence matrix has to be decomposed into a sum of binary matrices corresponding to fields deliverable with a multileaf collimator. We consider the problem to find such a decomposition with minimal delivery time. It is shown how the network flow formulation from [4] can be modified to take tongue-and-groove underdosage effects into account. In addition, we present a lower bound and a heuristic approach to the problem. Finally, we compare the heuristic results on randomly generated test instances with the exact solutions obtained with the MIP solver SCIP [1].

Reducing the tongue-and-groove underdosage in MLC shape matrix decomposition

We present an algorithm for optimal step-and-shoot intensity modulated radiation therapy minimizing tongue-and-groove effects. Adapting the concepts of [7] we characterize the minimal decomposition time as the maximal weight of a path in a properly constructed weighted digraph. We also show that this decomposition time can be realized by a unidirectional plan, thus proving that the algorithm of...

Binary matrix decompositions without tongue-and-groove underdosage for radiation therapy planning

In the present paper we consider a particular case of the segmentation problem arising in the elaboration of radiation therapy plans. This problem consists in decomposing an integer matrix A into a nonnegative integer linear combination of some particular binary matrices called segments which represent fields that are deliverable with a multileaf collimator. For the radiation therapy context, i...

Optimal leaf sequencing with elimination of tongue-and-groove underdosage.

The individual leaves of a multileaf collimator (MLC) have a tongue-and-groove or stepped-edge design to minimize leakage radiation between adjacent leaves. This design element has a drawback in that it creates areas of underdosages in intensity-modulated photon beams unless a leaf trajectory is specifically designed such that for any two adjacent leaf pairs, the direct exposure under the tongu...

Hardware-sensitive optimization for intensity modulated radiotherapy.

The multileaf collimator (MLC) hardware constraints are usually neglected in the process of intensity-modulated beam optimization. Consequently, it is not always possible to deliver planned beam modulation using dynamic MLC. Beam optimization is significantly diminished if the results must be approximated due to limitations imposed by the delivery device. To overcome this problem, an inverse be...

'Tongue-and-groove' effect in intensity modulated radiotherapy with static multileaf collimator fields.

The 'tongue-and-groove problem' in step-and-shoot delivery of intensity modulated radiotherapy is investigated. A 'tongue-and-groove' index (TGI) is introduced to quantify the 'tongue-and-groove' effect in step-and-shoot delivery. Four different types of leaf sequencing methods are compared. The sliding window method and the reducing level method use the same number of field segments to deliver...
